with comments from Philip Grosset "I came across your site on the web. Would be grateful for your comments on the attached photo. The photo is obviously of the House of Commons, I like the outcome, however, not sure if I should have left out the London Eye on the far right of the picture. The picture was taken from Lambeth Bridge, I waited until I had light from the House of Commons to add a different perspective.Would appreciate your comments.Full name is Simon Pickard and I live in Surrey." |

| The floodlighting in your photo on the left is very effective, but everything looks a bit distant, and there's rather a large expanse of water, so I'd be inclined to come in closer, as on the right. Reply from Simon Pickard: "I agree with your comments. The picture was taken with a non zoom camera, as I mentioned and you have shown, cropping to lose some of the detail on the right has helped it. Thanks." |

"I love flowers. I am still learning Photo shop and this one turned out nice. A little cloning, levels, color, used what seemed to work. What do you think?" (Michael A Fogle, -D-30, Sigma 50-500. Tiverton, England) |

| This photo is certainly colorful, even if a little unreal looking! The black background shows it off particularly well. "ok, one more, just for the fun of it. A rainy day at the beach. he just stopped and posed for me. Thank's for your input, michael." |

| I like your photo on the left very much, but it would be better still if you came in even closer, as in my version on the right. Reply from Michael A Fogle: "Thank you for your response." "Hi, I took this photo on a sunny spring day 2 years ago. The main thing in it is the bridge. It's one of the tourist attractions in my hometown, Lovech. I want to take up photography as a hobby so I'd like to know what mistakes I have made with this one. Cause I consider it as one of my best photos so far. My name is Irina Hinova and I'm from Bulgaria. Thank you for making this site. I think it's very helpful." |

| I suspect the quality of your photo on the left may have been affected by the scanning, so on the right I've increased the contrast and focused it more sharply. I've also moved in a fraction closer so as to reduce the amount of empty road in the foreground. The result shows the bridge clearly enough, but it's worth trying out a number of viewpoints before you take a photo like this. You might, for example, have found one that included some foreground framing, or perhaps more of the river, that you found even more appealing. It's all a matter of trial and error. Reply from Irina Hinova: "Hi, Thank you very much for the comments. I agree with you. You're right about the viewpoint. By the time I took this photo didn't know anything about foreground framing. I will keep practising and after some time(not soon probably) I will send you another photo. I also will try to find a better viewpoint for that bridge when it stops raining. :-) Good luck in everything, and have a nice day! (and night)." "Hi Philip sent you one photo a while back, i would like you to tell me how i am getting on please. The photo of the waterfall was taken with color print film but i changed it to black & white using photo suite. F22-1/6 used polarizer to stop down shutter speed for water motion. Photo of Harbour was taken using aperture priority at F22 not sure of shutter speed.ps started taking photo's as a hobby nine months ago." (Ian Moffatt) |

| You've certainly got the flowing water effect you wanted, but I'm not sure you gained by transferring it to b & w. It might be easier to see the water in color. | ||||||||||||||||||||||

| Your photo on the left is pin sharp and shows some really good reflections, but it might be better still to concentrate on just the most interesting part of the scene, as I have tried to do on the right. I think the result is really striking. Reply from Ian Moffatt: "Many thanks Philip for taking the time to look at my photos. I appreciate your constructive criticism and i'm sure it will help me compose my pictures better in the future" |
