Comments: I'm at that funny stage, Gone beyond a compact & just point & click yet not involved enough (or good enough!!!) to warrant spending half the house value on new DSLR equipement & divorcing the wife so I can convert half the house into a studio. In many aspects the site probably doesn't really cater for my current level (yet to find one that does!!! There's very little beginners stuff, loads of expert level stuff, if you have the gear, but very little in between. This site is about the nearest yet that I seen) but this site still has some extremely useful tips, ideas & pointers, a good few of which I still didn't know about. The one very big plus point is that it's not written by someone who assumes we all have the latest Nikon 'D' series, half a car full of lenses and a fully equiped studio with more lighting than Wembley Stadium. An excellent site for anyone looking to get into photography. Easy for me to say as it isn't me giving my time to it, but please keep it updated, it would be a great loss if it was left. Comments: I've been visiting many sights today on trying to find info on taking better pictures (would you believe that some sites don't even have photos. This has been the most helpful of all the sights i've visited. I found one of your pictures about small children visiting a garden interesting in that you noted that they were wearing uniforms. In the USA this has become an educational issue; some school districts have required the wearing of uniforms to improve the educational envioment. But there is always someone who thinks this interfers with the individuals right to free speech. The labratory coats that these students are wearing may be a solution. They have a professional look while allowing the students to wear their own choice of clothing underneath. I liked the feature of your sight that allowed me to print a copy of this photo to show to our local school administration. Have a great day. Mark

If possible could you consider some basic camera (digital)instructions, particularly in relation to use of camera controls for those of us who are a little older, and camera challenged! Comments: You could call me an intermediate level photographer who knows photographic technology quite well and who takes a good picture every once in a while but who mostly takes boring pictures. I think my biggest problem is static and uninteresting composition. The ideas presented in this web page are extremely good and helpful. They should help me increase the number of good pictures I take on a roll. I see in this web page a nice balance between technique and asthetics, with the technical aspect always serving the asthetic. I have an Exakta, a Rolleicord, a Zorki, a Speed Graphic 4x5, a Calumet 4x5, and a Rollei 35TE. The 35TE has one of those newfangled built in light meter thingies. My wife has a Canon Rebel, and I like it. In fact I used to own one as well, but I gave it to my nephew as a gift. My wife also has a digital camera, which I sometimes use, but I find that using a digital camera is too much like programming a VCR machine, or in other words more pain than pleasure. For some reason I actually like the old fashioned cameras best. What I hate most about the modern cameras is the sluggish shutter release on many of them. I also like chromes better than color prints and slow film better than fast film. I guess you can just call me a throwback to the Neanderthal age. Despite my preference for chromes I mostly take color prints now, along with a little black and white, and my involvement in photography these days is very sporadic.

I'm retired for over 2 years now, and at my former place of employment at a Medical Center (37 years), I took photos for functions. Comments: Hi, I found this site strangely enough whilst looking for a reference to Colorama processing. Very interesting I'm sure, to absolute beginner and fairly advanced amateur like myself. Although I suffer with eyesight problems. Macular degeneration and blindness in one eye. I still try to continue, and have been interested in photography for 60 years, beng now 72 years old. I have a Minolta Dynax 5 SLR, and a Nikon coolpix 4300 digital camera. Good luck for the future. Will be making this one a favourite as I need my memory jogging freqquently. Maurice Cuerton.

Comments: Philip, I've shot and wasted an sh-tload of 35mm and quite a bit of APS with some good quality and composition but I wish I had the $$$ I spent on developing bad shots that went to circular file. Although I did have better luck and experience when I eventually got APS, I think digital is certinly for me. I just purchased the HP Photosmart 735 as my first digital and absolutely love the thing. Its only 3.2MP.,3XO,5XD but I am amazed at the quality and the simplicity to use for less than $200.00. Oh I'm sorry, I could go on-and-on about how excited I am to delve into the huge world of digital photography that I almost forgot to complement your vast and useful website. Comments: Unlike most, I am going from Digital (3 Megapix) back to a 35mm SLR. The digital is fine on a clear sunny day but after seeing its performance with evening and indoor shots where my pictures really mattered I was disappointed. I think digitals still have a ways to go. Although I will keep it to use when convenient, when the photos will really matter, I'll be using film. Thanks for the pointers on your site, very informative and I needed a refresher as it has been while since I've done more than just "point and click".

Comments: Philip, I'm sorry but I think your site may do more harm than good to the budding photographer. The art of photography is in the initial composition of the image and in obtaining the correct exposure. It is not in cropping the image to remove an unwanted blanket, or in sharpening&lightening&rotating an image to turn it into something acceptable, or in adding a sharp image of a wine glass into a botched image of a party to create something of interest. While I'm sure that your intentions are good, I doubt your credibility as a professional photographer and therefore question your right to provide "professional" opinions to others. Many of the opinions offered on the "Your Pictures" pages seem gratuitous - perhaps because, once somebody has paid their $2, they don't want to hear "yes, this is a pretty good picture. Leave it alone."? I'm not trying to be nasty, and if others genuinely find your site to be useful then so be it. I just hate to think that start-up photographers take your word as gospel when, in my opinion, it is far from it. Good photography magazines, staffed by true professionals, would be a much better starting point. Congratulations to you if you leave this comment in the guest book. john. .................................................................................................................................................................... I use photo editing to show how a photo might have been taken - not to suggest that the initial composition doesn't matter. But, when it comes down to it, I believe it is the final result that really counts. His dogmatic assertion that the art of photography equals just initial composition plus correct exposure sounds distinctly naive - there's rather more to it than that! As to my own experience, I explain elsewhere that I have never been a full-time professional photographer - but I have been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society and have had hundreds of articles and photos published in the photographic press.

Comments: i appretiate you sharing with me this knowledge you know. it makes me think about photograghy differently. i've been doing (picture taking) for a while but just recently got a good $300 camera with focus and zoom and what now. i also have a student aid at my highschool in my art class that is taking classes in photograghy as well as arts and she is teaching me some too. after looking at some of her photoes and others i got inspired. we also have a dark room at our school thats not in use but my art teacher thinks i'm good at photograghy and he wants me to stay after some time and he would like to show me how to use the dark room. but thanks for all the tips. now i'm gonna go get 6 rolls of film and experiment with different shutter speeds and different amounts of light.
